Thanks Sid: My hosting company discovered that they had not installed ASP.NET 2 correctly and the site is running on-line okay for the moment--even with the BOM problem. I'm far from an expert in any of this, but it appears that they are BOM (Byte Order Marks). xWeb adds them to documents that have doc type of utf-8. I've check on the on-line server and every one of my aspx files has three characters (the same three exotic foreign laguage symbols: and 'i' with two dots over it and double >> (all in one character) and and upside down question mark) right before the original <!DOCTYPE html... statement.
