Re: Freeware Utility for RAR files? =========================================== Not for generating finished .RAR files. WinRar has a lock on that. There may be bogus softwares that have hi-jacked that capability, but we're talking legal freebies in a.c.f. 7-Zip [among several others] will

What's a sample media type that is having this problem? That would define the interesting questions to ask. The "page not found" issue I could only guess at given that the relevant registry data is now destroyed. Clearly your wmp.dll was not registered correctly, likely due to third party interference. =\ -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful

I know about the being busy thing... The page not found issue has gone and it is just downloading to a temporary file instead of streaming. This has been since following the original bad fix, and is still happening since following the instructions in the knowledgebase article you mentioned. Not ideal, but still better than media links not working at all. Although have I created a security

I apologize for the delay - I've been off being busy. =) XP bits of registry data: notably, it would impair file associations, creating the downloading versus streaming issue. Are you still getting the page not found issue here? That should only happen when the file association is corrupt to the point of potentially being a security issue, as would have happened here. That should now

Thanks for the reply. Out of curiosity, what adverse effect do the XP bits of registry data have? Is it the downloading instead of streaming issue? I didn't notice any other adverse effects. I followed your link to the knowledgebase article and updated the registry as detailed, and it still seems to behave in the same way. While the downloading instead of streaming thing is not ideal, at

Yes, the person who said it was a bad plan is me, and I'm right - this is one of my areas of wmp.dll . =) You're not supposed to be calling DllRegisterServer on wmp.dll on Vista: doing so writes a couple pieces of XP registry data. You don't want that. Anyways, the registry entries here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947541 will fix you up. -- Speaking for myself only. See

I've had this problem for ages with vista home premium and searched many times for an answer. At first changing the settings under 'set program access and computer defaults' to media player worked but then the problem came back. However, I seem to have found a sort of a solution by following these instructions: Run a command prompt as administrator. Enter 'cd \windows\system32' Enter

OK, I've scouted that out and it all looks fine so far. Go to the Default Programs control panel. Go to Set Program Access and Defaults and set WMP as the default - does that fix this up? If that doesn't fix it up, go to the Set User Defaults tool in Default Programs and set WMP as the default there - does that fix this up? If none of that fixes it up, export your HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry

On 20 Dec 2006 google@pilling.demon.co.uk wrote: The real point was how different archive formats are more or less sensitive to errors. Using the central directory is quicker so usually you'd want to keep the default setting. Incidentally ISTR Spark (the old application) does not use the central directory so that might be a quicker way of looking at any damaged files. Presumably
