I posted this to the samba list about a week ago and received no responses, so I'm hoping someone here can tell me what I'm missing. If I'm forgetting to add some piece of important info, prod as necessary. .... I've been struggling with this for a while, and though it worked for about five minutes Sunday night, it's been a no-go ever since I built my server last summer. What I've got:

I do enough transferring of large files that it makes sense to pay ~$100/year to maintain a site with full service hosting, not some freebie that can cause all kinds of grief. Usually, I can just use Windows' own FTP transfer to upload. If I run into trouble, then I drag out WS FTP, from Ipswitch. Of course, I use the site for other things, too, but mostly for file transfers. -- Gary S

I agree USB can be very flaky. AFAIAA EXT2 doesn't have any easy way of undeleting files even under Linux. For this reason, I use Reiser under Linux. As you already have the drive, a better solution might be to put it into a Network Attached Storage (NAS) unit which contains its own Linux server.
