I'm afraid I'm no expert, but since expert answers don't seem to be forthcoming, here's my attempt. I have done a bit of reading on this but perhaps no more extensively than you have. Alkofer recently wrote a brief review, hep-ph/0611090, which you probably have seen already. In talking about gluon propagators I think it's important to keep in mind that these are gauge-dependent quantities.
