Interesting reply from Kris Tyte, the designer of the spammer's website. Essentially it's the defence which lawyers call "wilful blindness" and amounts to "I didn't know anything about it, I didn't realise it was that bad and/or I was only obeying orders". Also frequently used by defendants in war crimes enquiries (I'm not saying Tyte is a war criminal, I'm just drawing a psychological parallel

I first saw this article in the Baton Rouge Advocate back on Friday(?) October 12.
