Ted, Thanks very much for your comments and also for the web site references. Didn't see Vaughn Monroe, but was lucky enough to see Harry James, Glen Gray, and others when I was a teenager living in Madison, Wisconsin. Well, I found a reference that credits the music to Johnny Watson, the lyrics to Vaughn Monroe and Pauline Pope - see http://www.encoremusic.com/piano/1704005.html Found another reference that says that he married his date to the high school senior prom (albeit some years later), evidently a long-standing and successful marriage, which makes it unlikely that any personal tragedy was involved
