Yes, of course they wanted torque, and quite naturally will any kind of engine produce some level of torque for the reasons you state. But the point was that now we have more ways of producing it - back then they found the easiest and cheapest way of producing it, which would still be by volume, using a long stroke and ideally a star cylinder (radial engine) configuration (an idea that we today
