Well, whatever the problem was, it appears to have fixed itself! Some additonal information: Windows Server 2008 is 64 bit and WSUS is running in the "parent" virtual machine. WSUS has been running correctly in this installation since it was installed a couple of months ago, until yesterday. WSUS 3.0 SP1 under Server 2008 Enterprise with Hyper-Visor enabled. I can interact with the WSUS MMC and it appears to be working normally. Also, client computers are receiving updates and both scheduled and manual synchronizations work. However, downloading updates from the Microsoft update site and "self update" appear to be having a problem, that seems to have started today - not sure
