My WMP stopped playing DVD when it detected editing software on my computer ( I'm assuming). I get the message "there is a problem with the digital copy protection". So I just play with Nero. You have a kajillion MPEG filters. Why? That's a road to ruin and probably where this broke. If you really need MPEG filters from 10 different vendors on your system you're going to need a DirectShow filter manager to make sure the right ones (in this case the Microsoft codecs that were already there and working) get used. More Info... OK, About two weeks ago I could play retail movie DVD's in the Vista Windows Media Player, now I can't. I have not installed any other software or changed anything. In fact everything has been like it is for a year now. Of course, I could use the other DVD players I have installed, but, I like to use Vista Windows Media player overall. It could have been present from one of a wide range of video editing or converting or importing programs (for example). You might get stuff like that with a new DVD drive, a hardware device, several types of camera or video camera, and so on. When the player is installed over a previous version, it seems likely that sometimes the list of available decoders could also be reset, requiring reinstall

Neil, Sorry to be responding so late. Happy New Year!! I have indeed read your response and do appreciate it, however, you have not addressed my concern re the computer's previous ability to play DVD's without problems. It seems to me that having the ability previously means that there was indeed a decoder present. What is to prevent any other decoder which I may purchase from suffering
