A diff disk is linked to an original disk, only the differences between the original are stored in the diff disk. The diff disk needs to be able to access the linked original disk in order to function. The use of a diff disk wouldn't be a good idea if your looking to move the VM from machine to machine on your flash drive, unless the linked file is also brought along on the flash drive.

In addition to my portability question yet unanswered I would like to ask specifically about the handling of differencing disks: When a diff didk is created it is about 30-40 kbytes in size. There seems to be no other additional file concerning the differencing disk. My question now is how the diff disk is handled if it is moved to another location and this other location is not on the same

Over the years I have been creating a lot of XP test machines by using a base vhd file where I installed XP-Pro SP2 back in 2006. For each new guest I used to copy the vhd file to a new folder and then create a new guest in VPC and point it to the copied disk file. This works great, but fills up my hard drive with essentially duplicated data (since I also use undo disks that are never committed

I have a vhd with XP, Oracle 10, Tomcat 6, Java6. It contains an Oracle DB instance with a bunch of tablespace files, but no data in the db. Uncompressed, this disk is about 6.5GB I create a differencing disk off of that base and a virtual machine using the differencing disk. In that disk I create a user in the Oracle DB, create a few tables and add a little data. I also create a webapp
