Thank you Noel and Mart ! I read a couple of other posts about ME startup problems and saw that they had restored the registry from an earlier date. I went ahead and used the DOS command in Safe Mode (I learned computing through FORTRAN and a card reader, a Sinclair ZX, and a 1982 IBM, so DOS doesn't scare me) and restored the registry to July 5. Well, I forgot that running in safe mode I can't use the CD drive, so while I downloaded the files to my laptop, I can't transfer them. I tried my USB Bridge and that didn't work either. I guess the USB ports aren't active. I think that the first isues that I have are with the start-up files. The last time that I booted, right after the Windows ME logo screen, I got a quick message that

Thanks for the response. I went to the website and read about the MDAC update. I am not able to use my internet connection and I am on a slow dialup, so I'll have to download to another computer then transfer. I didn't see anything about a scripting update. The first question has to be what changes were made to the system immediately prior to this problem starting? Has your friend tried booting to Safe Mode and then running system restore to roll their system back to a date before this problem started? Alternatively try booting to Safe Mode (keep tapping F8 as the system starts) and select "4. Step-by-step confirmation" and see if you can
