Currupt NTFS Partition

I reloaded XP and I have an external drive that XP can't read. The data is there but XP can't read it. I had an data recovery companyt look at it and they want mucho $$ to get my data. They said something about recreating some file and recovering the data. Did some online searching and some results say use Norton Utilities??? Any ideas?
