The Chinese New Year is now popularly known as the Spring Festival because it starts from the Begining of Spring (the first of the twenty-four terms in coodination with the changes of Nature). Its origin is too old to be traced. Several explanations are hanging around. All agree, however, that the word Nian, which in modern Chinese solely means "year", was originally the name of a monster

We are planning to be in HKG over the Chinese New Year, 2008. We want to do a day trip into Canton / Gwangzhou by express train. Over the New Year week I guess the trains will be over-crowded? If we book tickets now (with a reservation) will we still be able to travel? Or will the trains be so full that long queues and crowds will mean that we wont get on anyway? Does anyone have any advice as
