...saw it on discovery channel I think. it was a big hydro lettuce grow with talipia(?) in the tanks. Closed cycle bioponic system. Lots of research going on in Egypt with tilapia, where the species is native. Barley straw is reported to kill algae in aquaria or hydroponic tanks -- http://ohioline.osu.edu/a-fact/0012.html Maybe you could make algicidal filters out of the stuff?
