Ratings start as 3-stars automatically but in gray. Any gray rating has not been set by the user. Once you listen to a track all the way through one time, it will automatically go to 4-stars. I am not sure of the rules for when it will automatically go to 5-stars but it will happen. I avoid the whole mess by immediately rating all my tracks as 3-stars when added by multi-selecting all

If you close WMP in the middle of a Playlist, next time you open it, don't touch anything until the play button illuminates, when it does press it.
