Initially when I set this up, I had to put an * in front of Backordered to get it to sort to the top of the list and then in ascending order. that worked, but now that it's hit the tenth of the month it's putting 9/10/2008 under the Backordered Column but above

Formatting is not the same as storage. True date/time data is stored as real numbers, even if displayed as "m/d/yyyy". Go to the table and confirm the data type of the field. Is there a chance your query is converting the date/time value to a text value, THEN sorting the text value(s)?
