Finally figured out the problem. First of all, located the Microsoft decoder (msmpeg2vdec.dll). Removed all the other Sonic/Roxio codecs. Still didn't work. The problem turned out to be simple. I write kernel-mode drivers for Windows, and I had kernel debugging enabled on my system. Disabled debugging, DVD worked fine. Reenabled, DVD stopped working. I have to assume the MS filter won't

I wish I knew. I imagine I had some software that never really uninstalled properly. I'm not too familiar with these codecs. I'm glad you were able to tell me I have five. Anyway, I guess I need to know how to get these off the system, and then reinstall the recommended DVD codec for Vista Ultimate. Any utilities you would recommend?
